Junior IB English: Summer Reading!

Here is the Junior IB English summer reading assignment:

For those entering IB English A: Literature HL1 (English 3) – Read the fiction novel

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

and the non-fiction work

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.

An assignment has been placed on the Walnut High School website. The posted assignment, Summer Reading Review, is to be completed by you for each piece of literature assigned for summer reading. These assignments are due the first day of school. A sample reading review has been posted for your viewing to make you aware of the extent and detail your analysis should be. If you have any questions, email Ms. Donee (ldonee@wvusd.k12.ca.us).

Below you will find numerous documents to assist you. They include:
  • A Reading Reference Sheet Requirements sheet
  • A sample completed RRS (in Word format so you can easily create your own)
  • An overview document containing the assignment listed above
  • A reading on Transcendentalism
You need to read both books and complete both RRS assignments, 1 for each book. Students may check out a book from the textbook room, WHS library, a public library, or in some cases, obtain the novel online, free of charge.
This must be typed and turned in on the first day of school to your Junior IB teacher. You will also be directed to submit an electronic copy to turnitin.com on the first day of school. Your teacher will supply the pass codes on the first day of school.
The additional reading on Transcendentalism is also required. Please read through the material, as it applies to the lifestyle and convictions of Chris McCandless.
Good luck and enjoy the process!
