****Special note...sorry you guys I wasn't quite clear, I meant to go the farmers market NEXT weekend and bring in the food on the 16th....not the 9th...sorry for not being clear. Hi All, Please bring your permission slip and money for the field trip on the block day this week.
Also, your assignment for next weekend is going to be to visit a farmers market and bring in enough food (fruits, veggies, etc) to feed around six people. So for example you can bring in 6 apples or six carrots etc.
Please wash before bringing.
In addition to visiting the farmers market, I would like you to talk to the vendor and find out where the food comes from....does it come from a local farm, or is it from somewhere far. Be prepared to come to class with this information. Locally grown is best...so try to bring that in.
Some farmers markets near you would be the Walnut one, at Mt Sac.....I think I was told is on Saturdays...but confirm that on your own. Another one is near Colima and Fairway....not sure which day.
Claremont has one on Sunday mornings, I know for sure there is locally grown produce there.
Please discuss this assignment with your parents and plan to bring in something on Monday. This is not optional.

Also, we need chaperones for the field trip...so see if mom or dad can go...or older brother or sister....over 18.

To get credit, you must show all work and all units, write in complete sentences and finish every part of the question. Please go to youtube and look up vidoes on the James Bay hydroelectric dam and the Cree Indians. Watch a couple of the videos that tell the story of the creation of that dam and some of the impacts it had on the ecosystem and the Cree Indians. Write up a 2 paragraph paper. One paragraph should include a summary of the events and the second paragraph should be a reflection/give your opinon about the situation and how it impacted the Cree people and their culture.

Here is the Water Web Quest....try to work on it over the weekend, but it won't be due until next week either the block day or on thurs. Remember, you need to work on this together, so you might need to schedule some time with your partner or you can each work on it separately and somehow put your answers on one handout. Dear Students, as we enter the second semester of APES I feel that there is something I need to share with you all. I very aware of the fact that there is a lot of cheating going on with homework and tests in class. It's a sad day when some students spend more time trying to figure out how to cheat than actually doing the work (you know who you are). I didn't create this class to spend my time trying to catch cheaters.....I actually created it to teach content that is very important to me. If you are in this class and you cheat, please ask yourself why you are even wasting your time and mine. I feel that in the end you will gain nothing from cheating....you are only hurting yourselves and you probably won't pass the AP test. Cheating is bad karma....trust me, it is. So please if you are in my class and the only way you are getting by is cheating......either change your ways or ask to be transfered out. For the rest of you non-cheaters (which is most of you I know) you are the best group of students I have ever had....thank you!!!!!!!

For tonights howework, please finish reading chapter 6 then please do a "Case Study" on an Aquatic ecosystem. What this means is that you will be researching an actual aquatic ecosystem (i.e. coral reef, a specific area of a specific ocean, wetland/estuary, a specific lake or river, or an inland wetland) that has suffered some type of environmental destruction. Write up a 2 paragraph (9 sentence min per paragraph) summary in your own words, explaining the problem, where, when, why, what, how, etc..... and what's being done to solve the problem. Include a picture of your aquatic ecosystem, printing the pic is fine, with color is best. Be prepared to share your findings.....don't everyone do coral reefs!

Look on google for ocean currents and find one specific current and research it, then write up a one paragraph summary on that current, explain such things as where it can be found, is it warm or cold, which direction does it travel, what is its function, and what is it famous for. Should be at least 9 sentences.

-tropical rain forest, desert, grassland (aka savanna, pampas, steppes), deciduous forest, coniferous forest (aka taiga, boreal), arctic tundra, and mountain biome.

-types of flora and fauna found there
-general line of latitude where biome is found
-human impacts on biome

-small colored sketch of biome, including plants, animals, topography, etc.

1. When doing this experiment, a 4-hour exposure to light may be more convenient but a 24-hour exposure is a more realistic representation of what happens in natural ecsystem. Why?
2. On the planet Earth in the extreme north and south latitudes, how does the relationship between GPP and NPP change during an entire years time?
3. There is a direct relationship between GPP and the amount and intensity of sunlight in natural ecosystems. How does this relationship account for the distribution of biomass on the Earth?
4. Soil erosion can increase the turbididty of natural waterways. How do you think increased turbidity affects GPP and the natrual ecosystems that depend on it?
5. During the experiment, what is your direct evidence that, yes indeed, aerobic respiration is taking place?
6. In naturally occuring aquatic ecosystems, do you think changes in the water temperature would have significant impacts on GPP and NPP? Please explain.

Just google, "healthy forests initiative" there are actually different ways to look at this act, so check out what the US forest service has to say, but also check out what the Sierra club website has to say as well. Try to get a good understanding of each side's position and be ready to discuss your findings in class on Monday :)

Next go to google, and type in Tragedy of the Commons, do a little research and get an idea of some real life examples of where this type of situation has taken or is taking place in the world.
