Complete Satirical Cartoon for P&P

Pride and Prejudice

Social Satire Cartoon

Directions:  Create a cartoon satirizing the social attitudes or characters in Pride and Prejudice.  Remember that satire is a literary technique in which behaviors or institutions are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society.  What sets satire apart from other forms of social and political protest is humor.  Satirists use irony and exaggeration to poke fun at human faults and foolishness in order to correct human behavior.  For the most part, a satirist attempts to bring about change by exposing an oddity or problem in an imaginative, often humorous way.

The requirements are below:

  • choose a “topic” (social attitudes, characters in P&P)
  • use recognizable objects or characters but depict them symbolically/metaphorically
  • use blank paper (nothing smaller than 8 ½ by 11)
  • must be in black ink (and labeled if the drawing is not obvious)
  • write a caption (either a quote from text or explanation of drawing)
  • include a title: Social Satire in Pride and Prejudice (for example)

Read the NY Times article that I posted titled: "When Women become Men in Women's Colleges.

Write a one paragraph summary. (This is a lengthy article so remember the strategy of leaving out unnecessary details, covering the central ideas, and making sure it is in your own words.)

Then, write a one paragraph analysis/discussion of the issues that the articles raises. To say it's just about gender issues is not specific enough and too broad. The article points out and expounds on many pertinent aspects of the gender debate.

Read "The Wife of Bath's Tale" starting on page 77 with some background information about the author and the time period. Although this tale was written during the time period known as "Middle English" and is dated over 650 years ago, the ideas and themes in the tale are still relatable to people today.
