Department
English
Description
English 3 Honors is designed for academically talented 11th grade students who intend to prepare for entrance into competitive colleges and universities. It is a prerequisite for English 4 Advanced Placement or English 4 Honors. This course focuses on the study of language and the dialogue that occurs between the writer and his/her craft. Although the emphasis will focus on American Literature, we will also study prose and poetry from around the world. Throughout the thematic organization of the course, students will examine literary genres, styles and narrative techniques in depth, noting the similar and unique approaches to human life concerns across cultures. Skills that will be emphasized in depth include: critical thinking, reading comprehension, style analysis, oral and written commentary and research methods. The mandatory research paper (8-12 pages in length) will be taught fall semester.

General Guidelines

My expectations are that you write with precision and depth of analysis.  I also require that you adhere to standard guidelines for written English, including citing your sources using MLA format.  Please review the following notes, and keep them in mind as you write your entries.

  1. Citation:  When you cite your quotes, remember to do the following:
    1. Always include the page number when your source is a novel, the line number if it is a poem, and the act/scene/line number if it is a play.  You must include the author and title of the piece within your discussion.
    2. Put quotation marks around the entire quote, but not around the citation, and put the period outside of the citation.
    3. Always imbed your quotes within your function discussion, making sure that the sentence into which you integrated your quote is grammatically correct.
    4. Only use ellipses (…) when omitting words from the middle of a quote, not at the beginning or the end of a quote.
  2. Function Discussion:  Remember to keep the “Three Cs”—Context, Concept, Connection—in mind when you write your function discussion.  Submissions that do not discuss each of these areas will not receive full credit.
  3. Using Text from the Quote:  Whenever possible, remember to use text from your example in your function discussion.

I want to once again stress exactly how significant this assignment is to your grade.  It is, in some ways, the heart of our study of style analysis.  Remember that in college, it is precisely these types of long-term assignments that put the responsibility on you and that will comprise much of your coursework.

Benchmark Test
Crucible Related Readings: See Google Classroom for links to articles.

At this time, you are selecting two focus articles from one focus set (I, II or III) and following steps #1-8 as you answer the questions. You may either write the answers on a separate sheet of paper, or attach a Google Doc.
On Thursday, during class, you will be selecting two other articles from a different "focus" set (i.e. you first selected "The Persecution of Muslims in America"--now you will select from an article from either one or both of the other categories,  "The Persecution of Women in India" and/or "The Persecution of Women and Children in Africa." Whatever you don't complete in class will be due at 11:59 on Google Classroom.

Crucible-related Readings

Objective: In times of instability and uncertainty in the world, certain groups – due to religion, gender, or age – become systematic victims of persecution and oppression. Each of the articles you will read today is about the practice of “witch” hunting in today’s world. As you read, you will research these modern-day practices and relate them to two important themes in The Crucible: fear and greed. Questions you will explore in depth: How do fear and greed motivate modern-day witch hunts? How do they motivate the witch hunt of The Crucible? What are the differences and similarities between the fears and desires of each? For example, how does Anne Putnam’s fear of child mortality compare with the fear of crop failure in Africa?

Directions: Read four articles, and take notes on each. NOTE: You should read two articles from one set - I, II, or III - this will be your focus set. Your notes should contain the following eight pieces of information: 1. title of article, 2. author of article, 3. date of article, 4. name of periodical, 5. main point (thesis) of article, 6. intended audience of article, 7. all the causes for persecution mentioned in the article (for example, fear of disease, poverty, desire for profit or land), and 8. one fact from the article you found interesting. Then, carefully re-read the set of articles (I, II, or III) you chose to focus on, and write one paragraph (at least ½ of a page) comparing that modern-day witch hunt to the witch hunt of The Crucible. Pay particular attention to the role of fear and greed in both. Copy and paste address in your server.
