Project Lead the Way - Biomedical Science Program

Since 2013 Walnut High School has offered the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences Program.  This program begins in the 10th grade and can be taken as a stand alone program or in conjunction with our IB Career-related Program (IBCP).  PLTW Biomedical Sciences students are taking on real-world challenges - and doing it before they even graduate high school.  Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to problems.  Students take from the courses, in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they choose.  WHS offers all four of the courses in the Biomedical Sciences Program including the capstone course.  The courses are Principles of Biomedical Sciences Honors (10th grade), Human Body Systems Honors (11th grade), Medical Interventions Honors (12th grade) and Biomedical Innovation Honors (12th grade - capstone course), all which are UC/CSU a-g approved courses.  With the exception of the capstone course, all other courses take a national end-of-course assessment.
2025 Highlights:
  • WHS has 224 students enrolled in the PLTW Biomedical Sciences Program in the 2025-2026 school year.
  • National End-of-Course Assessment Results in 2025:
    • Principles of Biomedical Sciences Honors - 100% of our students earned proficiency, with 98% achieving at the highest levels of Accomplished or Distinguished.
    • Human Body Systems Honors - 100% achieving at the highest levels of Accomplished or Distinguished.
    • Medical Interventions Honors - 100% earned proficiency, with 92% achieving at the highest levels of Accomplished or Distinguished.
    • Biomedical Innovation Honors - No Assessment Required.
  • A White Coat Ceremony is held every May; this past May, all 39 graduating PLTW students received PLTW Biomedical Sciences white lab coats.
  • Out of 39 graduates in 2025, 24 joined the IB Career-Related Program, and 23 earned their CP Career-Related Certificate.
  • The class of 2026 will be our biggest graduating class at 67 students.
  • In 2024-2025, our program was showcased by PLTW, welcoming teachers and administrators from other schools to observe the successful implementation of the PLTW Biomedical Pathway in our classrooms. Displaying 2B40B979-39A1-476A-B8BD-2DB74492E4D3_1_105_c.jpeg
