hi my name is Elizabeth Everett and I'm the grade level coordinator for the academic design program at Walnut High School what is ATP we are a three-year academic pathway that uses a research-based methodology Salazar Macado's how we teach English and history and sometimes map and we asked her students to commit to the 10th to 12th grade taking English and history with us there a through the only difference is how we teach them we use something called design based learning and our students is filled create collaborate and communicate and I'll get more into that in the moment we are smaller Focus program family-oriented we like to think of our agent Ostrom does your students home on campus we are Hands-On and kinesthetic meeting we have learned with our hands but their minds and be creative Mind Body Connection best design based learning methodology is 50 this year it was invented by dr. Doreen Nelson who now teaches teachers how to do this at the UCLA Center X back in 1971 she use this at the Smithsonian in Washington DC it was called city building Tire City and storyline over the course of a school year we do this with English and history and Grace 10 11 and 12 and a problem so what it looks like in a design based Learning Classroom is for instance instead of telling students all about the pyramids in Egypt we would ask them to solve the problem what had created such as building memorial that would last forever so we would ask them why they're individually Granite group to build Memorial that last forever whatever that problem is and they would build a 3D design of this weed asked for it to be never-before-seen another criteria and do something and then they would share it out they were at what they built and they write about it and they do this at the beginning of every unit of study and again for us use English and history but it could be any curriculum I have a partir that I left UCLA Center X and after Journey Nelson is that and it design based burning classroom the teacher asks is a facilitator Observer and guys do didn't learn that their opinions count they gain confidence in explaining and justifying their thinking did they try out ideas in a safe environment and find that there are many right answers in perspective and in teaching like this doctor dream Nelson says if you ignite creative thinking what your students produce doesn't look like it's already been created their idea and you research and learn about the criteria and now I'd like to share with you student perspective of how we do this people to join a team because you get to make all these amazing connections the other people that you probably wouldn't have super exciting and you get to work with people you probably never worked before and it's a lot depends on its own building so you get a lot of fun with that as well it's a completely new and different way of looking at the classroom and classwork and it's it's own little world outside or inside of Walnut High School you're joining people that you're going to be for three years you're going to learn everything about them and you're going to join just to become better than what you are right now students who join ATP tend to have more of a open relationship with everyone you just help the student grow overall ATP student is someone who is open-minded and ready to learn and I find it anyway so the problem is willing to experiment with ways of ways of solving problems who is caring for what they do like you don't want to give work that you don't put all your effort into you want to get out something that you're proud of what kind of student whose creative and can work with others and be going to drift away from the typical type of or just text books and writing that work with others communicate be open-minded to being able to like were quickly to be productive or even if you work better with Hands-On learning like besides the regular like read a book rightly through paperwork it's a lot it's a new learning environment and for me it helps me out a lot about grouper to work together and solve a common problem for students with soft skills where the ability to interact with each other that they can problem-solve that they're not terrified of failing because they are always up for the challenge and our kids do that what makes ATP special we have the only a through G English and history program for grade 10 through 12 on the Walnut High School what is Hands-On and collaborative and communicated our students have a strong emphasis on speaking in collaboration giving them skills for the workplace they even rear tangible and digital that they can take with them to college or to the workplace we have our own student council we take field trips to colleges we have myself who has fewer students and the other DLCs on campus we have a call cohort of students that create strong friendships and I taught in this program so I even came back to be at CLC in addition to being an ATP our students can still be an athletic advanced placement classes band Orchestra will the Arts pathway Sports Medicine pathway Career Technical education Cisco networking Academy Wichita get into in a moment here counseling and ASD and I say hello all of these have occurred this is the networking Academy is fairly new we work with a Cisco company that creates networking solution and this two-and-a-half your program is house with 80 pieces program coordinator with Jen cervara is the mean teacher for this program when students complete the two and a half years of classes they can take the CCNA certification test and become a network administrator and get a job right away or they can use it to get into college and colleges with kylia Palmas would you give priority to ATP students and there are no prerequisites is a Hands-On learning how to network programmers actually take apart computers and put them back together in their first class and they have strong and successful career opportunities awaiting them if they take part in this you're next just have already moved all the way to step 2 because I gave out the Google application form the previous Friday at the time that I met with English 1 classes so here we are on Thursday January 21st and I'm inviting you to learn more about our program the pre-registration form is something Arce Oliver students on campus get from their GLC and I'll just indicate that they plan to do ATP next year and I'll already have them fill out an application in at least talking to them and answered any of their questions or your questions that you've had I'm hoping to get all of those turned in by March 12th but we have to go overseas to get their pre-registration school why the last item there is that they'll register for their classes with me in July and I will become their new GLC who are we so just to give a little bit of an idea of who we are from the right to the left is our program coordinator math and Cisco teacher extraordinaire mr. bharath behind her is me are history teachers starting the middle on past Miss for hay in the very middle to my left I miss Alder and Miss Takahashi standing in front of misterbnb who teaches English I thank you for your time and learning more about the academic design program like I said I have taught in it and I'm at GLC and I absolutely love her if you have any questions you can email me the address here you can call me at my school extension also listed in front of you there are links to the application to the entry form to our video that you saw invented I'm with students talking on our website and also on my tab on the Walnut High School website and the GLC tab
