Description

            Throughout the year, the students will develop professional and college preparatory skills that emphasize critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication.  Students will practice Common Core Standards for listening, speaking, reading and writing as they solve problems that people in any community would face. 

Students will analyze what they have read (fiction and nonfiction), and conduct research to support their views of an issue. The writing process will utilize technology to evaluate, revise, collaborate and publish.  Students will develop editing skills as they move from rough drafts to final drafts.  Speaking skills will emphasize formal well-supported presentations as well as informal discussions as part of a community of learners. Students will learn to analyze and apply vocabulary in context and will receive instruction on essential grammatical concepts to improve fluency and clarity.

  1. What does Simon’s death signify? How is it ironic?  What does the way he dies imply about the beast and the boys?
  2. Compare and contrast the way Ralph and Piggy deal with Simon’s death to Jack and his tribe? What does this prove about them?
  3. Discuss the imagery surrounding Simon’s death (before, during and after). What effect do they have on the mood and meaning of Simon’s death?

  2. How is Simon a Christ-like figure? Consider his relationship with the Lord of the Flies and his purpose.
  3. How does the way the boys hunt and play relate to the beast? How are their actions connected to the scene with the littluns in Ch. 4? What do their actions foreshadow?
  4. Why don’t the boys vote for Jack, but still follow him? What does this suggest about them?    About Jack’s type of leadership?

  5. How has Ralph changed as a result of his leadership and experiences? What does he value and understand more deeply than before?  How has his perception of the island changed?

  3. How is the fire that engulfs the forest at the end of Ch.2 ironic? What could it foreshadow? How does it relate to the meeting’s discussion of the beast?  Who could be most to blame for this disaster?
  4. What does the conch shell symbolize? What aspect of a society does it represent?  Make possible? 
  5. How is Piggy characterized? What does he value and promote? Why do some of the kids like to bully him?
