Prepare for Essay on Yellow Raft

1. Answer Qs 1, 2, 3 (P. 92)
if there are parts a., b., etc., answer ALL parts to the question.

2. Using the notes for MAP for "Sinners", write an introductory paragraph.
e.g.
In Jonathan Edwards sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Edwards drives fear into the Puritans so that they...

The introductory paragraph should satisfy all the elements of MAP and be a minimum of 3 sentences.

3. Find 3 rhetorical devices used by Edwards in "Sinners."
a. Quote the sentence(s) where the device is located.
b. Identify the device
c. In 1-2 sentences, comment on or analyze the use of the device.
e.g.
"your righteousness, would have no more influence to uphold you and keep you out of Hell, than a spider's web would have to stop a fallen rock" (88).
Analogy or Metaphor
Edwards is emphasizing God's authority and power over each person's life and that there is nothing they can do in their own power to save themselves. The metaphor of a rock falling through a spider's web sends a chilling declaration that Puritans are at the mercy of God's wrath and condemnation is inevitable if they are not saved.
